Kakao Pay & Bank team with Fireblocks on stablecoins

Kakao Pay and Kakao Bank have signed a memorandum of understanding with Fireblocks to explore digital asset infrastructure in South Korea, with a focus on secure onchain systems for the local market.
The companies will examine business opportunities shaped by South Korea's market conditions and infrastructure needs. Part of that work will focus on stablecoins and digital asset distribution frameworks that meet local regulatory, security and service requirements.
The partnership brings together two of Kakao's best-known financial businesses and a digital asset infrastructure provider that says it works with more than 2,500 institutions worldwide, including more than 100 banks. The parties also plan proof-of-concept tests to assess whether the proposed frameworks are suitable for the Korean market.
The move comes as South Korea's financial sector considers how digital assets, including stablecoins, could fit within existing banking and payments structures. By linking a major mobile payments platform, a digital bank and an international infrastructure specialist, the agreement signals growing interest in building local rails ahead of broader consumer or institutional use.
Stablecoin focus
Under the memorandum, the companies will explore how digital assets could be distributed in ways that align with domestic rules and operational needs. Stablecoins are central to that work, reflecting their potential use in payments, transfers and settlement if regulators allow wider adoption.
Kakao Pay and Kakao Bank are part of the broader Kakao group, which has extensive reach across consumer internet and financial services in South Korea. That scale could give the initiative an important role in the country's early digital asset development, especially if pilot projects move beyond internal testing.
Fireblocks is seeking to deepen its role with banks and payments groups in Asia as established financial institutions test blockchain-based products. The company says its infrastructure has secured USD $16 trillion in digital asset transactions across more than 200 blockchains.
Michael Shaulov, Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder of Fireblocks, said reliable infrastructure would be essential if banks and payment platforms in South Korea expand into digital assets.
"For banks and payment platforms in Korea, leveraging reliable digital asset infrastructure that is engineered to meet institutional requirements from day one is critically important," said Michael Shaulov, Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder of Fireblocks. "This is the prerequisite for widespread adoption, and Kakao Pay and Kakao Bank are setting the groundwork now."
Local market
The agreement reflects a cautious approach rather than a commercial launch. Proof-of-concept work typically lets companies test technical design, risk controls and customer use cases before committing to wider deployment.
That matters in South Korea, where any move into stablecoins or other tokenised financial products is likely to face close scrutiny over custody, compliance, transaction monitoring and consumer protection. The companies want to assess options that meet those local demands.
Yun Ho-young, Chief Executive Officer of Kakao Bank and Co-Head of Kakao Group's Stablecoin Task Force, linked the collaboration to the development of customer-facing services.
"We are pleased to collaborate with Fireblocks, the global leader in digital asset infrastructure," said Yun Ho-young, Chief Executive Officer of Kakao Bank and Co-Head of Kakao Group's Stablecoin Task Force. "By combining our technology and expertise, we will develop secure and accessible digital asset services that expand our customers' financial opportunities."
Shin Won-keun, Chief Executive Officer of Kakao Pay and Co-Head of Kakao Group's Stablecoin Task Force, highlighted the importance of distribution infrastructure as the market develops.
"The success of Korea's emerging digital asset market depends on the reliable flow of digital asset distribution," said Shin Won-keun, Chief Executive Officer of Kakao Pay and Co-Head of Kakao Group's Stablecoin Task Force. "Our strategic alliance with Fireblocks, a leading global infrastructure provider, lays an important foundation for that."
