MoonPay has launched PayBox for Claude and ChatGPT, letting users connect an AI assistant to a payment vault.

The product is designed to let an AI agent move, trade and spend money within a conversation while the user retains control of the funds. Users can ask the assistant to carry out actions in natural language, such as converting money into a stablecoin, swapping tokens, bridging assets, making bookings or shopping online.

The AI prepares a transaction, and the user approves it with a passkey before funds move. The system can be connected through a custom connector inside Claude or ChatGPT.

The launch marks a push by the payments and digital assets group to position itself at the centre of transactions initiated by AI tools. Until now, conversational assistants could automate research and administrative tasks, but users typically had to leave the chat interface or rely on another provider to complete a payment.

PayBox supports Solana and a range of EVM-compatible chains, including Ethereum, Hyperliquid, Tempo, Base, Robinhood Chain, Arbitrum and Polygon. The first live integrations cover restaurant reservations, travel bookings and shopping with major online retailers.

Control model

Users can choose between two approval settings. Under "Always Ask", every transaction requires passkey approval, while "Autonomous" lets the AI act within limits set by the user.

Changes to permissions require fresh passkey approval. Each authorisation applies to a single action and cannot be reused, and access can be revoked at any time.

At the centre of the product is a structure intended to avoid giving either the AI system or MoonPay direct control over a customer's money. Card details are stored so an agent can make payments without being shown the underlying number, while wallet keys are protected through multi-party computation and secure enclaves.

No single party, including MoonPay or the AI agent, can access the full private key or sign transactions independently. Card payments use Visa's agentic commerce protocol to reduce the risk of leaked or reused card numbers.

Security focus

MoonPay framed the product as a response to common fraud risks in AI-driven payments, including stolen credentials, exposed card numbers and systems where one point of compromise can unlock funds. In PayBox, authorisations expire after one use, preventing captured approvals from being replayed.

Underlying the service is technology from Sodot, the key management business MoonPay acquired earlier in the year. That infrastructure secures more than $50 billion in assets and more than 10 million wallets for crypto firms, and now underpins every PayBox vault.

The product also extends MoonPay's reach beyond its existing role in linking fiat payments and digital assets. More than 1,700 enterprise clients use its broader platform.

Getting started involves installing PayBox inside Claude or ChatGPT, creating an account, registering a passkey, and then creating or importing a wallet. Users can also add payment cards and fund the account through an existing wallet or by card after identity verification.

MoonPay presented the service as a way to let AI systems transact without taking custody of funds. That distinction is likely to matter as AI companies, payments groups and crypto businesses test how much authority consumers are willing to delegate to software agents.

For the wider market, the launch adds to a growing effort to build payment infrastructure around AI assistants rather than websites or standalone apps. By linking chat-based interfaces with digital wallets, cards and blockchain networks, companies are betting that commerce may increasingly happen inside an exchange of prompts.

"The card hid the cash. The phone hid the card. This is the era where money disappears into conversation. Billions of AI agents are coming online, and every one of them will need to hold, move, and spend money safely. Someone had to build the trust layer for that world. We just did. PayBox is the product that MoonPay was built to make," said Ivan Soto-Wright, Chief Executive Officer and Founder of MoonPay.
