PDG completes phase one of AI-ready data centre in Johor

Thu, 11th Jul 2024

Princeton Digital Group (PDG) has announced the successful delivery of Phase One of its 150MW JH1 data centre campus, located in Sedenak Tech Park (STeP), Johor. The JH1 campus, one of the largest in Southeast Asia, is a flagship AI-ready facility serving some of the world's largest technology firms.

Phase One, comprising 52MW of the JH1 campus, was completed within 12 months, aligning with PDG’s SG+ strategy, which aims to facilitate seamless expansion of infrastructure from Singapore to data centre campuses in Singapore, Batam, and Johor.

The JH1 campus integrates sustainable technologies and next-generation design, including solar panels on the rooftop to generate renewable energy. PDG had secured a MYR 1.276 billion (approximately USD $280 million) green loan for the JH1 campus earlier this year, marking a significant step towards reducing regional AI infrastructure emissions.

A celebratory event marking this milestone was officiated by Yang Amat Berhormat Dato’ Onn Hafiz bin Ghazi, Menteri Besar Johor, and Yang Berhormat Senator Tengku Datuk Seri Utama Zafrul Aziz, Minister of Investment, Trade, and Industry (MITI).

Yang Amat Berhormat Dato’ Onn Hafiz bin Ghazi stated, “We are proud to witness the delivery of Phase One of PDG’s JH1 campus which has been one of the fastest projects to be launched in Johor. It not only signifies a significant investment in our state's infrastructure but also brings forth immense opportunities for technological advancement and economic growth. This initiative will undoubtedly bolster Johor’s position as a hub for innovation and attract further investment, ensuring a prosperous future for our state and its people.”

Yang Berhormat Senator Tengku Datuk Seri Utama Zafrul Aziz commented, “Delivery of Princeton Digital Group’s JH1 data centre campus within 12 months after it was first announced reflects the speed of Malaysia’s investment facilitation, and MITI’s pro-industry, pro-investment stance. Indeed, Malaysia's growing stature as a regional leader in Asia’s digital economy, particularly for sustainable data centres, is evident from recent major investment announcements by global tech giants. Through our clear policies and strong execution, MYR 161.97 billion in digital investments have been approved from 2021 to March 2024, and we are pleased to see many earlier commitments coming to fruition.”

He further added, “PDG's green data centre supports the nation’s aspirations to leverage on tech to bridge opportunity gaps in areas such as education and business for all Malaysians, as outlined in the MADANI Economic Framework and the New Industrial Master Plan (NIMP) 2030.”

Rangu Salgame, Chairman, CEO and Co-founder of PDG, remarked, “Data centres form the cornerstone of the digital ecosystem, facilitating the seamless flow of data, enabling generative AI, and empowering hyperscalers to innovate at unparalleled levels. We are highly appreciative of the steadfast support of the Malaysia government, whose proactive policies have played a pivotal role in creating a supportive environment for the industry. JH1 is further testament to our unmatched track record of execution as a leading pan-Asian data centre operator.”

On this occasion, Sikh Shamsul Ibrahim Sikh Abdul Majid, Chief Executive Officer of the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA), commented, “PDG's decision to establish its flagship AI-ready facility in Malaysia cements our nation’s status as the premier investment hub in the region for AI data centres. As Malaysia continues to establish itself as a key player in the global digital economy, the JH1 campus will play a crucial role in driving innovation and fostering a knowledge-based economy. MIDA assumes a crucial role in attracting top-tier digital investments, ensuring that projects like the JH1 campus contribute substantially to our nation's economic expansion, technological progress, and sustainable development.”

During the ceremony, PDG also signed an energy supply agreement for the entire capacity of the JH1 campus with Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB). This follows the successful energization of the first phase by TNB under the Green Lane Pathway initiative.

Asher Ling, Chief Technology Officer and Managing Director of Singapore, PDG, highlighted the company's commitment to expanding its presence in Malaysia. “It is a proud moment for PDG, delivering Phase One of JH1 today. However, establishing a state-of-the-art green data centre campus like this goes beyond economic growth; it's also about PDG’s commitment to nurturing talent and creating jobs in this rapidly growing industry. We are dedicated to equipping individuals with the skills they need to thrive as data centre professionals and being strong contributors to the local Johor community,” said Ling.

In October 2023, PDG was awarded Malaysia Digital (MD) Status, the highest recognition of excellence for digital companies in the country. This award demonstrated PDG’s commitment to the nation and its support of the development and growth of local talent.

Ts. Mahadhir Aziz, Chief Executive Officer of Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), commented, “MDEC is proud to support PDG's progress made in Johor here today, as we are dedicated to expanding the nation's data centre infrastructure and enhancing our digital ecosystem and competitiveness. This partnership aligns with the Malaysia Digital (MD) national strategic initiative, underscoring our commitment to nurturing talent, driving innovation, and establishing Malaysia as the digital hub of ASEAN. Together, we are paving the way for a prosperous and sustainable digital future.”
