Power 50 unveils 2026 payments ranking amid pressure

Wed, 3rd Jun 2026 (Yesterday)

The Power 50 has published its Payments Power 50 list for 2026, an annual ranking of 40 companies and 10 industry figures from the global payments sector.

Now in its second year, the list comes as payments groups face pressure from merchants, banks and regulators over transaction performance, fraud controls and operational resilience. It highlights businesses working in payment orchestration, processing, acquiring, fraud prevention, identity, open banking, cross-border payments, embedded finance, compliance technology, digital wallets, infrastructure and settlement.

Companies named in the 2026 cohort include Aevi, Compass Plus Technologies, Ecommpay, INFORM, Paymentology, ProgressSoft Corporation, sends, Sis ID, Sokin and XTransfer. The ranking also includes 10 industry influencers recognised for shaping debate and sharing insight across the market.

The announcement comes during a period of intense competition in payments, with providers assessed on the reliability and safety of money movement, as well as their ability to reduce failed transactions and support new payment methods. Merchants are seeking stronger approval rates, while banks are exploring new approaches to open banking, cross-border transfers, digital wallets and settlement.

Industry pressure

The list comes against a backdrop in which the mechanics of payments have become more central to commercial performance. Payment failures can damage merchant revenues, while fraud, compliance demands and service outages carry financial and reputational risks for providers.

That has increased attention on the systems and controls used to move funds between consumers, merchants, banks and other financial institutions. Fraud prevention, identity verification, and settlement infrastructure now sit alongside more visible services, such as wallets and embedded finance, in defining how payment groups compete.

Jason Williams, Chief Executive Officer of The Power 5, outlined that view in comments released alongside the list.

"Payments have always attracted big ideas, but the industry is now being judged on delivery. Can money move safely, quickly and reliably? Can businesses reduce failed transactions, protect customers, improve merchant performance and support new ways to pay and settle?

"That is what makes this year's Payments Power 50 so exciting. The companies and individuals featured are not talking about payments from the sidelines. They are working on the systems, services and ideas that keep modern commerce moving.

"The Payments Power 50 is designed to recognise that work, bring the industry together and give the people shaping payments a platform throughout the year. Congratulations to everyone included in The Payments Power 50 2026," said Williams.

Wide scope

The range of categories covered by the ranking underlines how broad the payments market has become. Infrastructure providers, fraud specialists, open banking firms and cross-border payments companies operate in the same ecosystem as acquirers, processors and wallet providers, even though they serve different parts of the transaction chain.

For businesses selling into the sector, that complexity has created room for specialist providers focused on narrow parts of the process, such as compliance technology or identity checks. At the same time, larger providers are under pressure to offer more integrated services as clients look to reduce costs, improve acceptance rates and meet regulatory obligations.

The Power 50 describes itself as a media platform and networking hub focused on influential figures in payments and financial technology. Its annual guides are intended to identify the companies and individuals shaping their sectors, with the payments edition now part of that broader portfolio.

Those included in the 2026 list will appear in the group's annual publication and on its website. Support for the payments ranking came from organisations including MPE, The Hoffman Agency, The Payments Association and The Paypers.
