AI Experience Center opens in Jayapura to boost education, health

Yesterday

Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison has opened an Artificial Intelligence Experience Center in Jayapura, Papua Province, aimed at broadening access to artificial intelligence for communities in Eastern Indonesia.

The facility, known as the AI Experience Center (AIEC), was inaugurated by Nezar Patria, Vice Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, alongside Vikram Sinha, President Director and Chief Executive Officer of Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison. The event was held in commemoration of National Awakening Day.

The centre's primary objective is to serve key sectors in Jayapura, with a particular focus on education and healthcare. In education, the AI Experience Center seeks to provide personalised and accessible learning experiences for students in remote and underdeveloped regions. This initiative is intended to promote equal educational opportunities across Indonesia.

Within the healthcare sector, the application of AI at the centre is geared towards enabling quicker and more accurate disease diagnosis, including conditions such as tuberculosis. The centre will support medical personnel working in healthcare facilities with limited resources.

Nezar Patria, Vice Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, stated, "I appreciate Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison's initiative in establishing the AI Experience Center in Jayapura. Digital transformation must reach every corner of our nation. The presence of this center is a symbol of Indonesia's digital awakening - an era where every citizen, including those in Papua, has equal access, opportunity, and competitiveness."

Vikram Sinha, President Director and CEO of Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison, said, "The AI Experience Center in Jayapura is a testament to Indosat's commitment to making technology a unifying and empowering force. By bringing AI to regions that require greater attention, we aim to create more equitable access to quality education and support more responsive and accurate healthcare services. This is a tangible manifestation of our mission to empower Indonesia and drive inclusive technological advancement."

The AI Experience Center has been developed in partnership with global organisations including Huawei and the Wadhwani Foundation. According to Indosat, the facility is expected to act as a catalyst for innovation and strengthen the development of human capital by delivering practical AI applications with direct benefits for local communities.

Supported by Indosat's 5G network, the Jayapura centre is equipped with facilities such as training rooms, digital learning platform access, and collaborative spaces catering to students, professionals, and the local community. It is intended to serve as a hub for nurturing digital talent from Papua and bridging the digital divide between Western and Eastern Indonesia.

The initiative is positioned as part of Indosat's broader strategy to advance digital transformation on a national scale, specifically aiming to enhance the development of local digital talent and promote the uptake of AI within Eastern Indonesian regions. The company states that by fostering a culture of innovation and skill-building, the AI Experience Center seeks to accelerate both digital transformation and regional growth.

Indosat reports that the Jayapura centre will deliver practical, on-the-ground benefits to communities, with the intention of supporting economic growth and opening new opportunities for social development throughout the region.
