Dropbox unveils new features for remote work, enhances Microsoft integration
Fri, 26th Apr 2024

Dropbox has today unveiled a raft of new features, including seamless end-to-end encryption and key enhancements to its Dropbox Replay product. The update also includes new integrations with Microsoft tools, all in response to customer feedback, primarily from businesses dealing with the challenges of remote working.

In the new work-from-home environment, with teams scattered across time zones and even within other firms, tasks previously seen as simple, such as collaborating on documents or responding to feedback, have become major challenges. To mitigate these issues, Dropbox has developed and integrated new capabilities into its platform.

Among the updates are critical security enhancements offering end-to-end encryption for business teams and advanced key management, providing additional layers of protection for team folders and ensuring that only intended recipients can access them. Speaking about the security improvements, Dropbox co-founder and CEO, Drew Houston said, "Our latest product updates aim to empower teams to cut through the clutter so they can do more focused, meaningful work."

Dropbox has not only provided additional layers of protection for confidential content but has also streamlined the process of reviewing and improving Microsoft files. Integrations with Microsoft Teams, real-time Co-Authoring, and Copilot features allow teams to work more efficiently, avoiding conflicting files. Document reviews are sped up thanks to new Dropbox Replay features, which also support PSD and PDF files, adding new branding capabilities, and more.

Senior Product Manager at Microsoft, Harshal Patil, highlighted the importance of these integrations. “The Cloud Storage Partner Program offers partners like Dropbox the ability to integrate with our solutions. With this integration, users now have a more seamless way to collaborate on documents stored in Microsoft 365 or Dropbox, thereby addressing evolving customer needs,” he commented.

The improvements also encompass the introduction of DocSend Advanced Data Rooms, facilitating faster end-to-end deal execution with real-time insights, taking a significant administrative burden away from teams.

The enhancements are designed to better sync communication and collaboration capabilities, improving efficiency even with geographically dispersed teams. Drew Houston expressed optimism about these advancements saying, "I’m excited about what we’re building for an AI-first future, and we’re just getting started."

All Dropbox customers will have access to new capabilities to:

  • Easily preview a file as you navigate through your folders with quick view. Customers can now also identify what's inside a file or folder by hovering over it in grid view. Get to your favourite files quickly by pinning items within quick access in an updated left navigation bar. Kickstart work with suggested quick actions for files—like editing a PDF—that change based on how users work.

Customers on paid plans will get additional features like the ability to:

  • Access content in fewer clicks with dynamic filters that automatically organise your content—like by project name or themes. Find similar files faster with smart suggestions that show files related to what you’re viewing, like similar PDFs.
  • Quick view, quick access, and suggested quick actions will begin rolling out globally today. Dynamic filters and smart suggestions are now rolling out to paid plan users in the U.S. in English only.
